Divination of a Natural Eclipse
.
This art work was commissioned by Cliff Valley Astronomy for their Special Event during the April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse near DoakTown, New Brunswick. Please see their Website for further information on Astronomy and Astrotourism. The painting entitled "Divination of a Natural Eclipse" by artist Renate [Roske-Shelton] is a vibrant and intriguing artwork that beckons the viewer to peer into a world where mythology, nature, and symbolism intertwine. The title suggests a ritualistic or mystical insight into an eclipse, a natural celestial event that has fascinated and bewildered humankind for millennia. In the corner of the painting, a pair of divining rods—forked and unassuming—cross each other subtly as if quivering from the hidden currents beneath them. These ancient tools, traditionally used to locate ground water, symbolize humanity's quest to tap into unseen resources, be it physical like water—a life-giving force and symbol of renewal and purity—or metaphysical, drawing from the wellsprings of knowledge and intuition. The way the rods seem to interact with the eclipse suggests an alignment of earthly discovery and cosmic mystery, evoking the idea that every act of searching, whether for water or wisdom, mirrors the interplay between the visible and the invisible, the known and the inscrutable. Their inclusion in the painting weave a narrative of seeking, finding, and the perennial renewal that comes from the depths—of the earth, the self, and the cosmos.

Ecology Interupts me - What does this mean to me ?
A Poem by Renate
The freshness of day and play,
and the youthful wonderment of exploration into newfound domains;
Fresh skills inhaled and mastered in the trying,
success and failure, to and fro, the tests of time, time-tested.
In the Tidal waters of our Bay new challenges overflow the now crumbling termination line of summer,
the present and profoundness of a ‘now', anew;
all stepping down onto high shoulders yet up-lifted to maritime and naval history like Cygnus in the skies.
A past where explorers channeled future winds,
Zephyrs of knowing and adapting,
yet, all, courageous approximations only,
leading onward, to Ultima and her shifted secrets, coming of age,
like flowing sand, shape-shifting to the prize, the goal
and back to the beginning.
Back to pebbles and beach glass of our coastal youth,
a playground shaft of foggy light, screeching gulls, and tumbling gravity.
Here the memories are made,
like frozen fossils in the time of rolling rocks,
yellow and bright orange sparkles in Weeds, Waves and Waters of the Bay.
The ying and yang as perpetual motion;
there Sediment and here Sacrifice live on;
into the far milky ways of our lost and found again imaginations.
The ecology of the artist's mind amplifies, clarifies and records these voices of Nature.
Each in our own language of knowing and understanding.

From the book “Star Stories” 2018 Anita Ganery and Andy Wilx:
Among the Stars of the Northern Skies is a Majestic Swan,
its long neck and wings outstretched. Long ago the swan was a man who lived on Earth.
Today it glides through the Milky Way for all eternity.

Renate's paintings are inspired by the natural theater of the Canadian Maritime landscape where she currently lives. Its marvellous play of light, rapidly changing weather and distinct seasons are reflected in her paintings.
Her creative inspiration is touched by significant life experiences and early global travels throughout Europe and the World. Renate always paints with an eye toward decoding complexity, finding and capturing essential prototypical cues with an overall goal of achieving compositional harmony and creating a peaceful sense of being 'at home' with nature and its elements.
Renate paints to 'create stories' in her pictures that convey emotional resonances in the viewer. She enjoys engaging the viewer with color-intensive subjects that stretch between ultra realism and dreamlike impressions and may include explicit symbols or marks, or subtle commentary.
All of Renate's original artwork is for sale.
Renate is an artist member affiliate and supporter of Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Center and its Galleries in St. Andrews by the Sea. Canada.
